Headache Relief

Headaches can either start really big or start small and work their way up to debilitating.  People who live with chronic headaches or migraines are often running to the medicine cabinet for drugs that help minimize the pain.

At Active Health KC Chiropractic and Rehab Clinic in Prairie Village, we want to get our patients off of the medication and into a safe treatment plan that will stop their headaches by managing the source of the pain.  Our goal is to find a healthy, long-term solution to your headache problems, no matter the kind of headaches you experience.

What Our Patients Are Saying About Their Headaches

There are a handful of kinds of headaches and all offer differing degrees of pain.  Some are so incredibly severe a person experiencing it may not be able to function at all.  Others may get a headache when they look at a computer for too long and when the computer turns off, the headache starts to diminish.

When possible, patients should see a chiropractor when a headache is present.  This will benefit the patient due to immediate relief from their pain.

When patients come to see us for their headaches they often say that they’re suffering from one or more of the following:

  • Throbbing, dull, or aching pain
  • Pressure on the head
  • Chronic headaches
  • Migraines
  • Tension headaches
  • Cervicogenic headaches
  • Light and/or noise sensitivity
  • And more

Those who suffer from headaches sometimes say that they “feel a headache coming on.”  This is a true statement, as many people will start to feel depressed or irritated and may even get nauseous or vomit just prior to the headaches onslaught.

Our chiropractic care office specializes in finding the cause of the headache so our patients no longer need to rely on medication to mask their pain.

In most cases, the symptoms are brought on by:

  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) / jaw pain
  • Neck-related injury
  • Improper spine movement
  • And more

Headaches can cause you to miss work, events, activities, and family time, even the headaches that don’t seem to be that bad.  The nagging sensation and the anxiety one feels that it will worsen forces many people to avoid loud places or any kind of activity.

If you experience headaches, chiropractic care can benefit you greatly.  Through naturally helping the body regain its balance, patients see excellent results and headaches are lessened in frequency and pain.

Why We Experience Headaches

Headaches can sneak up on us at any time.  It may start with a little throbbing behind the eye, but before you know it, it can consume your entire head and then your entire day.  So, why do we get them at all?

There are an abundance of answers to this, especially in today’s world of technology.

  • Stress
  • Poor posture
  • Using devices (computer, phone, pad, TV)
  • Lack of sleep
  • Diet and dehydration
  • And more

The chiropractors at Active Health KC Chiropractic & Rehab in Prairie Village understand how the nervous system can influence the body to act and react.  When the spine is out of place, the pressure is moved around the spine disproportionately which can lead to headaches.  Restoring proper function to the spine correctly will reduce headaches, or even prevent them altogether.

We provide techniques that will help control all kinds of headaches, but perhaps even more beneficial to our headache patients, we offer insight into muscle referral patterns, muscle and joint imbalance, nerve dysfunction, and dietary contributions.  All of these working together will offer headache relief and body wellbeing.

How We Treat Headaches

Headache treatment is determined by its cause so our chiropractic care team will work to find the reason behind the symptom.  We strive to minimize the use of medication, even when it’s over-the-counter.  Using medication consistently can be harmful and tolerance may become a problem, forcing the patient to use more than the recommended dose.  We work to find the root of the issue so any kind of medication becomes unnecessary.

At Active Health KC Chiropractic & Rehab we want all of our patients to feel comfortable with their treatment plan, so we have open communication regarding the process that we think will work best for each individual.

Our techniques are only outmatched by our lifestyle advice which comprises proper stretching and exercising tools, diet information, and ways to live a healthy lifestyle.  When combined with the correct chiropractic techniques, these will contribute to less frequent and less severe headaches.

The most common techniques we use at Active Health KC Chiropractic & Rehab include:

Chiropractic care: this is a non-surgical, drug-free treatment that involves spinal manipulation or adjustments used to release restricted joints of the spine and extremities.

Functional rehabilitation and exercise therapy: using rehabilitation techniques and targeted exercises for corrective reasons is a safe way to treat pain and help the body’s performance.

Dry needling: when muscles are tense, tight, or not functioning correctly, acupuncture-like needles are used for targeted treatment that will often give instant relief to the triggered muscle.

McKenzie Method (MDT): this is a series of tests that allow us to determine posture and body mobility, the results provide the information necessary to create a working wellness plan for the patient.

Muscle and soft tissue therapy/myofascial release: this technique offers relief to pain connected to muscles or nerves with impaired movement.

Nerve flossing: flossing a nerve will alleviate pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness caused by neural tension.

Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS): a powerful technique that promotes proper activation and coordination of the neuromuscular system.

Generally, each exam will last about one hour in our office, but the patient will be provided with some form of exercise that they can utilize at home or work throughout their daily routine in order to achieve the balance their body needs, safely.

Headache Alleviation and Visits

A headache alleviation plan will be put in place after the patient’s initial visit with us.  We will first determine what kind of headache the patient is suffering from and the reason their body is succumbing to the pain.

Because so many of our professions are dependent upon computer work, we will give detailed descriptions of exercises and stretches that can be done to prevent neck and spine imbalance and help support a natural, healthy posture.  When posture is not taken into account, we are at greater risk for recurring or chronic headaches.

Chiropractic care is known to provide stress relief which is so important in today’s climate.  Stress is all around us and stress headaches are very real.  Working through your stressors, the mental and the physical, is a must when trying to find body balance and healing.

Stress management will contribute to a healthy lifestyle, as well as a healthy mind, body, and soul.
