Relief from Athletic Injuries / Sports Injuries

Athletes come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  You could be a marathon runner, a competitive team player, a CrossFit junkie, or a stay-at-home mom chasing a toddler around all day.  When you’re active, your body receives some added pressure and stress.  That additional burden on the body is okay if treated and maintained properly.

If you have an active lifestyle in the Kansas City area and are looking for body excellence through correct body balance and synergy, the chiropractors at Active Health KC Chiropractic & Rehab are exactly who you’re looking for.

Doctors Cotter and Remsburg are active participants in athletics themselves, so they truly understand what it takes to keep the body healthy and working at top function.

What Our Patients Are Saying About Their Sports Treatment

We cater to a variety of sportspeople and offer individualized treatment plans depending on the needs of the patient.

When people come to us for sports treatments, it can be due to sports injury, to help them prepare for an upcoming sporting event, or for the ongoing, proactive body wellness that necessitates a fully functioning athletic body.

Initially, sports patients come to our Prairie Village chiropractic office with any of the following conditions related to their sports injury:

Even though there is a great variety in sporting events, workouts, exercises, etc., often the cause of the pain the athlete feels is the same.

These symptoms are usually the product of one or more of the following:

  • Strained muscle or sprained ligament
  • Muscle soreness due to overuse or improper warmups
  • Joint stress
  • Improper spinal movement or spinal fixations
  • And more

If an athlete experiences any pain, they should see a chiropractor as soon as they can in order to remedy the root of the issue, get the body functioning at its best, and learn techniques that will help prevent future injury.  All of this will help keep the body safe and healthy during a very active period of time.

We also offer athletic care to those who are working to achieve a goal, such as finishing a race, a sports competition, or working on more flexibility.  These patients are hoping to take pain and injury out of the equation before it happens.

Our chiropractic care office works with each sportsperson to ensure their safety before, during, and after their event.  We provide the body with the benefits of balance and a solidity to help support the athlete every step of the way.

Minimizing Sports Injury

An active body is supposed to be a healthy body, but it’s important that the athletes keep up their end of the bargain too.  This entails providing care and maintenance that allow the body to work at top speed.

Some tips to help the sportsperson minimize injury are:

  • Using correct warmup and cooldown techniques
  • Using proper techniques/posture
  • Using the proper padding when necessary
  • Finding the body’s proper balance and gait
  • Getting the proper rest, nutrition, and hydration
  • Working with a chiropractor to ensure body health and wellness prior to a sporting event
  • And more

The chiropractors at Active Health KC Chiropractic & Rehab in the Overland Park area work with all types of athletes at every stage of life.  Whether competitor, weekend warrior, high school all-star, marathon runner, or CrossFit goer, we want your body to work as it should so it can support you and keep you feeling great and working great.

Our treatment techniques and guidance will give you what you need to keep your body highly-functioning and well-balanced.  Athletes need specific support to ensure the body can work through prolonged pressure, so we offer targeted body protection advice through natural exercises and stretches that will aid in excelling and encouraging the athletic body.

How We Treat Sports Injuries

Sports injuries come to us in many different forms, so we have many different methods to help alleviate pain and find the cause of the pain.  Because in most cases an athlete has hopes of getting back to their routine quickly while minimizing the possibility of re-injury, it’s important to restore the body efficiently.

At Active Health KC Chiropractic & Rehab we want all of our patients to feel comfortable with their treatment plan, so we maintain an open dialogue and provide helpful advice that will give the athlete the necessary information to make an informed decision on how to move forward.

If we feel that an athlete is not well enough to move forward with an event, although we don’t like having to give this advice, we will be the bearer of bad news.

We work hard to get the athlete’s body where it needs to be in order to successfully and safely get through a sporting event, the most common techniques we use are:

Chiropractic care: this is a non-surgical, drug-free treatment that involves spinal manipulation or adjustments used to release restricted joints of the spine and extremities.

Functional rehabilitation and exercise therapy: using rehabilitation techniques and targeted exercises for corrective reasons is a safe way to treat pain and help the body’s performance.

Dry needling: when muscles are tense, tight, or not functioning correctly, acupuncture-like needles are used for targeted treatment that will often give instant relief to the triggered muscle.

McKenzie Method (MDT): this is a series of tests that allow us to determine posture and body mobility, the results provide the information necessary to create a working wellness plan for the patient.

Muscle and soft tissue therapy/myofascial release: this technique offers relief to pain connected to muscles or nerves with impaired movement.

Nerve flossing: flossing a nerve will alleviate pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness caused by neural tension.

Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS): a powerful technique that promotes proper activation and coordination of the neuromuscular system.

Each exam will last about one hour in our office and we provide patients with exercise and stretching regimens that will help keep the body aligned and the muscles in top performance.  It’s important that our athletes stick to the plan we’ve agreed to, so their healing time is kept at its minimum and the body has the time it needs to get back in shape.

Sports Injury Alleviation and Visits

We want all of our athletes to succeed in their physical and mental health goals, so after we initially meet with them we can devise a plan that will benefit them from the inside out.  Healing the body and keeping it safe from reinjury is key to athletic performance.

Chiropractic care will help manage pain and stress on the body as it keeps the mind at ease.  For top results, visit a chiropractor while preparing for a sporting event and start with a well-balanced body, free of pain medications that may allow you to push through, but will also allow for more underlying damage.

If you’re looking for health advice before, during, or after an athletic event, Active Health KC Chiropractic & Rehab can help.

“Dr. Jeff is awesome! I credit Dr. Remsburg with helping me successfully complete my goal of running the KC Marathon. After months of training, I developed a few minor injuries that interrupted my training plan. Dr. Remsburg developed a treatment plan that allowed me to continue with my training and I finished my first marathon on October 20th. I would highly recommend Dr. Jeff Remsburg.” – Darren B., Prairie Village, KC

“I am a big endurance racer. And I had developed knee pain and a bad case of Plantar fasciitis during training for the upcoming race season. So bad that running was not an option. After going to a doctor and them just telling me to stop running and wanting to shoot me up with cortisone and not really help solve the problem. I started to look at other avenues. I was given Dr. Remsburg’s number by my swim coach. Right from the start. He started to come up with a plan to stop the pain and help prevent it from coming back. In just a few weeks I was feeling better and could tell things were getting far better. After the pain was gone. he developed a series of exercises for me to do on my own at home. I have been pain-free ever since and my foot and knee have only gotten stronger since. I highly recommend Active Health solutions to any of my friends and family!” – LJ S., Prairie Village, KC

“I’m a trail runner, triathlete, Ironman finisher, and marathon runner… Needless to say, I break myself sometimes. Dr. Tom gets to the root of the problem quickly and gives me a treatment plan that is sensible. He gets me back on the road and moving again!” – Spencer D., Prairie Village, KC
